Can Holiday Allowance Affect Employee Motivation

7

Here in Britain we are slowly returning to work after the extended weekend that comes around every August. The Bank Holiday gives everyone a chance to enjoy a bit of extra time in the summer sun which should get us all ready for the build up to the next break we’ll get at Christmas. In Britain we face the very unusual situation of offices being either depleted or completely empty for much of August and the week over Christmas, but do our holidays make us more motivated at work?

An interesting article on the BBC website explores the freedoms we have with our holidays in Britain compared with the much shorter, and in some cases non existent holidays employees are granted in the USA. It would appear from reading the article that the US is the only country out of the top 21 richest in the world not to impose a legal mandate on employers granting time off. But what does this do to employee motivation? Do us Brits find ourselves more motivated as a result of our holidays or does the time they take up interfere with overall productivity?

There will be many views from many quarters arguing the merits or otherwise of employee holidays, but their effect on motivation should not be ignored. The idea of holiday allowance being awarded on merit or as a result of long service is one that may appeal to some companies as a way of offering an incentive to workers. But rather than motivating junior employees, could this approach just lead to staff resenting those co-workers who have holiday allowances that they don’t?

Burnout is also a factor in employees’ holiday as a well deserved break from work can ease stress levels and allow staff time away from the stresses and strains of work. Although work levels may be hit while employees take holiday, there is surely an argument that productivity levels out when compared with stressed, tired and unmotivated staff who have not been granted holiday.

There is no doubt that employees in Britain are lucky when it comes to their holiday allowance, and changes in the law over the years have made it a much fairer working environment for employees with rights and privileges that have never been seen before.

Employee motivation is now key, with bosses realising that they will get more out of a happy and rewarded workforce than by cracking the whip. Indeed, employee motivation is now big business, with strategies and award schemes being established to offer employees incentives and rewards for improving their work.

This British approach to working practices has done well to survive given the increasing use of American corporate motivation practices by UK firms. It would appear that whatever practices are adopted over here, there’s nothing that will ever stop us from enjoying our holiday.

Other Types Of Holiday Reps

14

Another type of holiday rep is the transfer rep.

The transfer representative is more often than not with the guests when they are being transported from the airport to their resort accommodation and vice versa.

There is also another type of rep called an entertainment representative. This rep will often schedule activities for the guests based on their interests for daytime and nighttime entertainment.

The above listed representatives are the main holiday representatives. Often times, there is one representative that maintains the majority of these all together rather than having several separate representatives.

The Requirements to Become a Rep

Although, the requirements will vary between tour operators (companies), there are a few main qualifications to become a holiday representative. However, if you do not have these qualifications it is nothing to worry about as many of the touring companies will still consider you as becoming a representative. Of course, they prefer you to have these qualifications, but in most cases, it is not mandatory.

Below are the 4 main qualifications of becoming a representative, so you can check them of your list of your goals:

– 4 GSCE’s that are equivalent to or above a C grade

– 6-12 months experience within the customer service industry

– Ability to work within a team as a mutual effort

– Experience in administration

– Even if these 4 qualifications were absolutely mandatory, the average person looking into becoming a rep would more than likely have these qualifications.

Some useful qualifications would be certificates or degrees within the travel and/or tourism industry. By having already developed some understanding of the information that may be needed to perform your job as a rep in another country, it will be sure to help you in the long run from your interview to the actual job on location.

By trying hard enough when speaking to the touring companies, you can get the job without having the above qualifications. Most of the touring and travel companies believe in more than just the qualifications as many of the representatives can be a perfect rep without holding any of the 4 listed qualifications.

However, by having these qualifications to begin with, you will find that it is much easier to land the interview and the job. You just need to learn how to present yourself to these companies and show them that you are what they need and want because you are unique and the best.

A Stress Free Holiday In 3 Easy Steps

14

For many going on holiday can be a very stressful experience. This is kind of ironic as going on a holiday is supposed to be relaxing. The main reason why so many people are at their wits end is usually down to a lack of planning, preparation and leaving things to the last minute. With just a few simple changes in how you organise your holiday you can make your next holiday a relatively stress free and enjoyable one.

Children

Going on holiday is a family affair however, for many parents the holiday can turn into a nightmare dealing with and servicing the demands of the kids. It is important to remember that as a parent you have a life too and that the family should not revolve around the kids. The children are a part of the family not the centre of it. Therefore, before you go on holiday make it crystal clear with the kids that mum and dad want to relax too. This will mean some sort of negotiation and compromise that can work along the lines of taking the kids to the zoo in the morning but, the afternoon is for relaxing on the beach with a nice refreshing fruit cocktail.

Sunscreen

You finally arrive at your holiday destination after a long flight and you head down to the beach to catch a few rays. The sun is hot however, you realise you forgot to pack the sunscreen oil, ouch! If you and the family are going to a hot country make sure you take plenty of sunscreen and make sure the protection is strong enough. The minimum protection is SPF 15 but if you are heading to the Asia you will need sunscreen with at least 25 to 30 SPF.

Travel and Medical Insurance

Travel insurance is one of the most common and important things people forget to organise when they go on holiday. They only realise they need it when they end up in a foreign hospital with a huge medical bill to treat their broken leg. As well as your medical costs insurance can protect you from losing your luggage and valuables. It can also cover you if your flight or holiday is cancelled. There are many online and comparison websites to check what is available. Compare the best deals and only get cover on things that are relevant to your situation. Usually the earlier you book the cheaper it will be.

What To Eat During Your Ski Holiday

14

Compare for a moment a beach holiday with a ski holiday. The first is all about lying under the sun and doing practically nothing, whereas the latter is taking advantage of as much light as possible by skiing, walking and snowboarding and other activities that require a lot of energy. Besides, a cold environment makes the body burn more calories.

This of course does not mean that we are allowed to forget our good weight loss habits. On the contrary, it is important to be even more careful, because when we get carried away it is easy to forget how to eat properly.

If you are about to leave for your ski resort, for the whole week or just for the weekend, it is important to know how to eat. In this article I will point out a few tips to follow during your winter holiday.

First of all: forget about drinking alcohol to protect yourself from the cold, it is just a myth and a dangerous one indeed. If you feel warmer after your shot of whiskey or grappa, it is probably because of the bar you are sitting in. Since alcohol is a vasoconstrictor, the effect will be exactly the opposite: you will feel cold.

Do not forget the proteins: in a cold environment our body instinctively craves for carbohydrates, forgetting about proteins, which are essential to keep a good muscular integrity.

If you do not want to waste time in the restaurant at lunch, have several small meals during the day, rather than a proper lunch; bring some energy bars with you.

Speaking of bars, be careful with chocolate. It is true that it gives a lot of energy (about 550 Kcal for 100g), but unless you are planning an Arctic crossing, walking 12 hours per day, lower calories bars, with yogurt or muesli are a better choice.

If you have to sit down and have a proper lunch, stay away from fat foods. It is not hard to find them in a mountain resort, but the myth around them is that they will give you more energy, and make you warmer, but in fact they will just slow down your digestion and make your skiing in the afternoon harder. And of course leave alcohol for after dinner.

Even if your lunch was light, always wait one hour before going back to the ski run.

At dinner, if you had carbohydrates for lunch, balance them with proteins.

Now go have fun!

Building Your Dream Ski Vacation

19

A successful ski vacation is likely to combine a number of different features. If you’re looking to make the most of such a vacation, then it’s clear that you’ll need to plan carefully and to consider all aspects of what’s involved.

So how can you go about doing so? It makes a lot of sense to give consideration to each of the individual elements in turn. To begin with, you may wish to consider the time of year that you’re intending to travel. Although this may seem like a strange suggestion, particularly if your focus in on Europe, there’s more to this than meets the eye.

The reality is that there are numerous destinations available to you, which also means that you have a significant range of dates to choose from. With serious resorts operating in North America and Japan, for instance, you may not need to limit yourself to European destinations.

This does, however, lead on to inevitable questions about the budget that you have available to you. In many senses, this is also less significant than it may initially appear. Although flights may cost a little more, in some cases, it’s also true to say that they probably represent a small proportion of the total vacation spend.

So you can decide on when you want to travel and then start to consider specific destinations. You may begin by highlighting a country, before moving on to think more closely about individual resorts. You’ll find that you’ll need to give plenty of consideration to likely snow conditions, but that there’s also plenty more to think about.

I always believe that accommodation has a large impact on the success or failure of any trip. If you really want to have a great time, then it makes sense to think about whether you’ll opt for a hotel, or maybe take the more interesting option of looking at ski chalets.

My personal preference is for the latter, since I believe that this offers a more unique experience. Although it can be nice to stay in a quality hotel, there’s no doubt that a luxury chalet can really help your vacation to stand out from the crowd. You’ll also want to look closely at the facilities that are available to you.

What about for times when you find that you are away from the slopes? In such circumstances, it’s likely that you’ll be looking for other forms of entertainment. Whether that means seeking out restaurants, or finding the best nightclubs, you will discover that much of the research can be carried out before leaving home.
